I am interested in joining the U.S. Marine Corps and was wondering a little about training. First off, what are some great exercises to prep for boot camp? After boot camp what other training is there (for infantry)? Overall how long is the training? I.E. before deployment or stationing

First, boot camp is not as hard as you may make it out to be. it’s possible if you have heart and always do what the DI’s say with speed and intensity. That being said, you should focus on endurance for the hiking, and stamina for your runs (Longest one is 5 miles, at the end of boot. Better known as the “Motivational Run”). Work on your pullups/pushups and study up on your knowledge! (General orders, rank structure etc). It’s better to arrive in shape than to get there and be assigned to the PCP (platoon conditioning platoon). It delays your graduation and frankly just sucks. Avoid at all cost
After boot camp, all Marines recieve 10 days of leave. (Unless you request recruiter’s assistance which can earn you up to two weeks more. I’d suggest you tell your recruiter before you leave that you’re interested in doing that).
For SOI (School Of Infantry) it is 2 months of Physical training, Patrolling, Operating in any enviroment, learning and firing the weapons etc. At about week 5, you’ll be assigned your specific MOS; for example 0311 = Rifleman.
After SOI you’ll report to your first duty station.
Deployment training (better known as Mojave Viper). Check out this video:

@Anthony – Great answer! (The only thing I’d like to clarify is PCP stands for Physical Conditioning Platoon.)
@OP – The best exercises to do before boot camp are probably the ones you’ll be doing in boot camp. That means body weight exercises such as: sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, air squats, and lots of running.
I’m assuming you haven’t enlisted yet. If/When you enlist, your recruiter and their boss should be able to give you a PT regimen that will get you physically prepared.
Good luck! And feel free to contact me if you have any more questions!
